An update from the Chairperson [G Baker] on 17 March 2022

I am forwarding information from Cavalli Properties Ltd, who will commence the harvest of some of the forest that is currently growing on proposed stage 2 of the subdivision residential development at the back of the Bay.

It is my understanding that PF Olsen have been tasked with managing the forest harvest, that the intention is to extract the least amount of trees as possible and to cause the least disruption to local traffic flow as possible. I will post more information once dates and the period of the forestry harvest has been confirmed.

Some shareholders/uri have asked to be informed about potential archaeological sites. I have been sent the following extract from the full archaeological report.

Historic Sites

Operations are to be conducted in accordance with an approved Heritage NZ Authority. Respect the land as we are guests. There is one registered archaeological site within the harvest area (site P04/572 – midden) that is noted as a maroon coloured asterisk in cell E7 on the map (note that site shown in D6 is incorrect – the corrected location is in E7). Other sites are present in the surrounding area, including the adjacent flats and pa sites on the ridges above the harvest area.

Prior to any operations, the forest manager and contractors will have a walk-over of the harvest area to confirm the location of known sites and to confirm how they will be avoided. Representatives of Matauri X and the archaeologist will be invited to attend this walk over.

The principles of operations will be to minimise ground disturbance. The practices will include:

- Laying geotextile and then roading aggregate metal atop the existing ground to form the road access. The purpose of this is to avoid excavation and to protect any sites that may be under the ground.

-Laying logs and geotextile in the skid area to similarly protect any underground areas. Allow slash and processing residue to build up to cover areas of adjacent mineral soil.

- Felling and pulling away from the known archaeological site; leave high stumps around the perimeter of the site to reduce risk of trees or logs swinging into the area.

- Wherever possible keep machinery on existing tracks. This includes using the existing track at the base of the forest as the main extraction route to skid 1.

- Avoiding cross-slope machinery movement as much as possible – maximise machine travel up and down perpendicular to the slope.

- All workers will be inducted into the processes required in the event of discovery of a previously unidentified site. This will include moving operations away from the immediate vicinity and contacting the forest manager, the nominated representative of Matauri X, and the archaeologist.
